The
Wright Brothers took
off on their historic flight from Kill Devil Hills on
December
17, 1903
.
From this same barrier island off the Atlantic coast,
Kill Devil's Frozen
Custard and Beach Fries was born just 99 years
later, on April
1, 2002
when we opened our first restaurant.
The
name Kill Devil, as the story goes, happened like this:
A few hundred years ago, when all our goods arrived
by ships, there were many who ran aground off this coast and
when the ships broke apart and the cargo washed ashore, one
of the most sought-after commodities was the wooden kegs
filled with Kill Devil rum.
Unfortunately the rum is long gone, but the quality
food that Kill Devil's offers
is certainly in great demand from coast to coast.
The
decision to open a high-quality food and ice cream
restaurant started in 1957 when, as a 14-year-old I worked
in a custard stand in Middletown,
N.Y.,
where they made authentic frozen custard.
This shop was the focal point of this small town in
the lower Catskill
Mountain
area and it was a common sight to see people waiting in line
to taste the velvety smooth rich flavor of this gourmet ice
cream. Very
simply, it’s the best.
Competition?
Well there is none, not even the largest ice cream
franchise in the country.
No other ice cream can beat it.
Frozen custard is made fresh hourly and is made
totally different from other ice cream products, therefore
you stand alone in the market place – your customers will
notice the difference with the first lick (and how many ice
cream establishments use real
whipped
cream?)
It may have taken me 45 years to finally realize my
dream, but good things take time.
Once we were satisfied we had the world’s best ice
cream, we needed to expand our menu with the very best
quality of some very classic food items.
As we are all aware, behind every successful man
there is a great woman and mine is also a gourmet cook –
she set the bar pretty high for these additions….like our
fabulous, juicy, marinated “Better
Burger” – you need lots of napkins!
Or our Coney
Island hot dog:
We have the recipe for the original sauce that dates
back to the early 1900’s and that recipe has been a prize
winner in
New
York
for almost a century. Our
Beach Fries?
They’re hand cut from Idaho’s
best (never frozen) and cooked in pure peanut oil to a
golden brown. The
NC Bar-Be-Que sandwich
we serve is an authentic southern treat and we put it on a
buttered, toasted roll with our homemade coleslaw.
This is a real hit on the west coast.
We’ve
rounded out our quality menu with a veggie burger served
with homemade hummus and a black bean burger served with
salsa, as well as three new wraps.
Kill
Devil's is
poised to fill what is a significant void in the fast-food
industry – the consumer is looking for quality.
From babies to grandparents, everyone loves ice cream
and we have the best. Our
food items are America’s
top choices with a gourmet twist.
In
a word: it’s
Killer!
